The credit union movement in Louisiana includes more than 250 credit unions; the Louisiana Credit Union League, the state trade association for Louisiana credit unions providing products and services to credit unions; and a host of other service providers.

Unlike other financial institutions, credit unions aren’t for-profit companies that exist to make money for shareholders. Rather, they’re not-for-profit cooperatives striving to improve the financial well-being of their members-the people who belong to credit unions. They’re called members, not customers, because they own the credit union and have input into the way it operates, and the products and services it offers.

Members elect other qualified members who volunteer to serve on the credit union’s board of directors or other committees without pay.
